General Summary -

Responsible for producing quality multimedia content on behalf of the university. This individual will coordinate and collaborate within the Division of Communications and university-wide to ensure integration of photography and video content across all communications channels.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Regularly produce quality and compelling content and post it to Eastern Michigan University social media channels. Content will include campus events, activities, strategic communications about academic programs and faculty.

Work with Social Media Specialist, and the Marketing, Media Relations, Integrated Content team members to provide content and assist in the distribution of content across all communications channels, including social media.

Provide strong writing, video and photography production skills.

Write short stories/text to accompany produced content in post.

Craft, produce, edit and organize strategic, relevant and quality photographs and videos used to support and promote EMU communications and marketing materials, including social media.

Coordinate and collaborate division and university wide to ensure all photography and video assignments and projects are integrated, completed in a timely fashion and meet EMU's high-quality marketing standards and best industry trends and practices.

Shoot video and still photographs and post to social media and other communications channels for projects assigned to serve strategic institutional objectives in the areas of University image, development, recruitment, and retention.

Engage with campus colleagues and photo subjects to coordinate pre-production, including scheduling, location scouting, initial concept development, storyboard creation and work plans.

Coordinate field-production, shooting and/or directing video and still photography.

Implement all elements of a shoot, including interviewing of subject(s), lighting, audio, image capture and backdrop set up -- from concept/creative direction to completion.

Conduct post-production video and still image editing leading to final production, while seeking input and approval at key points of production.

Export files to final distribution formats.

Use all current and emerging technology in videography, graphic animation, and image editing to deliver finished products in accordance with project directives.

Implement strategies of Search Engine Optimization and how coding, content and page linking work together to increase keyword relevance and drive placement in search engines.

Maintain and enhance digital media assets library (photo and video).

Upload and post selected images on website using Omni CMS.

Use software tools for creation of web-based photo/video galleries and/or distribution of images via email marketing.

Perform related departmental duties as assigned.

Supplemental Information:




Four-year, accredited college or university degree in multimedia, video, photography, marketing, communications or a related field.

At least three years of demonstrated experience working in a multimedia content and convergence environment, including the production of digital content utilizing written communications, video and photography to create compelling visual stories for a variety of platforms, including web, digital and social media.

Strong written, communication, creative, relationship and social media skills.

Possess a solid understanding of the best practices for web and social media writing and standards, and search engine optimization.

Demonstrated success in posting produced content on behalf of previous employer to employer's Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat accounts.

Ability to take and immediately post relevant and quality photos and videos on social media, including writing effective and creative titles and captions.

Experience working in a diverse and high-paced environment.

Willing and able to adjust to multiple and changing demands, and shifting priorities.

In-depth experience of HD photo and video cameras, lenses, editing software, graphics and/or photo/video imaging software (i.e. Adobe systems, Illustrator, Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro, etc.)

Excellent skills in Adobe Premier or other video-editing software, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom. Technical knowledge about Nikon and Canon video and photography equipment. Experience with content management system such as Omni and WordPress.

Excellent skills with multimedia platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Periscope, Twitter and Snapchat.

Demonstrated knowledge of media production, sound design, video editing, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in project planning, resource allocation, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Previous experience providing work direction and development of staff.

Evidence of messaging skills, including the ability to convey effective stories through multimedia platforms to a variety of audiences.

Demonstrates active listening skills and ability to work autonomously and in teams.

Evidence of analysis and problem-solving skills.
