General Summary:

Develop, implement and manage library database projects including Library Intranet (Drupal) and Library forms and tools (Symfony) which support the Library Administration and overall workflow; creating database applications, designing user interfaces and collecting statistics for assessment.

Support the Library's overall web environment. Act as primary point of contact for maintaining Library website functionality and content (OmniUpdate Campus), in conjunction with EMU Integrated Content and Library's Digital Presence team.

Work as the primary software support specialist. Develop applications to facilitate effective workflow, local content creation and information dissemination this includes integrating archives and library-specific third-party solutions into the design (i.e. Research Guides, chat software, and the Alma/Summon library system.)

Update and maintain security of library web-based systems. Library systems are highly specialized and many are not covered by the security updates of the central EMU IT organization.

Serve as a member of the Library Systems Team and provide backup support for other team members as necessary.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain database driven web pages to help manage and secure the library's digital presence.

Provide general technical support in the library with particular focus on software and/or database applications.

Create and manage the on-going operations of library's local content databases.

Work with librarians and staff to coordinate and facilitate interactions between the library's commercial and open source software applications such as but not limited to the integrated library resource management system, collection management tools and locally created databases, including use of APIs.

Keep existing systems updated with current security patches; monitor existing systems for presence of any security threats or intrusions.

Implement changes to library systems impacted by updates to the University IT Infrastructure. When appropriate, determine performance problems, recommend and/or implement information technology solutions in the library.

Develop, install, and maintain library software applications on technical platforms supported by the University.

Meet project deadlines as assigned; contribute towards multiple projects when necessary.

Follow coding standards and create and maintain project documentation.

Test projects to ensure application quality prior to client validation.

Perform other duties, as assigned.


Knowledge of computer information systems, data management systems, systems and business application development and IT security best practices typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field is required.

Strong relational database design and web programming experience (MySQL, PHP, Perl, XSL) is required.

Experience with front-end web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JavaScript libraries such as Jquery is required.

Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills is required.

Excellent written and oral communication skills is required.

Ability to work independently as well as contribute to team projects is required.

Prior experience adopting, implementing, maintaining and/or modifying open source software (i.e. Drupal, Archivist's Toolkit, LibStats) is highly preferred.

Knowledge of library services and operations including digitization projects is preferred.

Experience with PHP Frameworks such as Symfony or Laravel is preferred.

Experience working in both Windows and LINUX environments is preferred.

Experience with Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC is preferred.
