The Hartford Foundation is seeking a Director for our Nonprofit Support Program (NSP) at a critical time in our history and a pivotal moment for the region. We are searching for a creative, innovative change agent who is passionate about the organization’s mission, and about building on the twenty + years of excellence in capacity building by the Nonprofit Support Program in Greater Hartford. The Nonprofit Support Program is a nationally recognized leader in capacity building work by foundations, and is an important resource for the nonprofit sector in our region, providing technical assistance, learning opportunities, and grants for infrastructure improvements that help nonprofit organizations to better serve our community.


Our next NSP Director will make significant contributions to the Foundation and to the community by both continuing NSP’s tradition of high quality technical assistance, learning, and grant making activities, and by identifying and implementing innovative, creative, and exceptionally effective approaches to strengthening our region’s nonprofit organizations, ultimately improving the delivery of services to people, focused on the most critical services related to the Foundation’s strategic priorities.


The key accountabilities for this position are:

• Direct all operations of the Nonprofit Support Program including selecting, developing, and supervising NSP Associate Director and officers, indirectly supervising all NSP staff. Develop and manage $3 million annual budget for operations and grant making.

• Lead strategic and annual planning for all NSP activities, in alignment with the Foundation’s strategic direction; lead the design and direction of initiatives, strategies, grants and other solutions that build highly effective nonprofit organizational leadership and execution capacity. Identify and capitalize on opportunities for outreach, collaboration and state of art programs.

• Contribute to Community Investments leadership and overall Foundation leadership planning, implementation, and measurement of results and impact to accomplish the Foundation’s mission.

• Maintain state of the art professional knowledge and skills through a variety of learning and engagements with partners: participation in professional associations, workshops, conferences, interaction with peers and recognized leaders from the nonprofit sector, as well as government and academic sectors, individual and group research project, ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion are a focus of all learning and practice.







Minimum Requirements for this position are:

• 10 years leading and managing staff and financial resources involved in developing and delivering high quality, innovative, efficient services and programs which produce measurable positive impact, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
• Track record of thoughtful analysis, thorough research, and creative innovation to achieve challenging and important goals.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with peers, subordinates, leaders and partners in the community, to produce favorable, measurable, outcomes.
• Proven commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, demonstrated ability to lead and participate in highly effective diverse teams.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including formal and informal presentations, proposals, reports, and analyses, as well as highly developed listening skills.
• Thorough familiarity with financial management in nonprofit organizations, demonstrated ability to review and analyze budgets, financial statements, and financial forecasts, as well as to develop and manage effective budgets.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, evidence of engaging subordinates and peers in learning to improve practice.
• Bachelor’s and Advanced Degrees in Social Sciences, Management, or related field(s).
