Job Summary
The Special Education Social Services Coordinator works collaboratively to create appropriate mental health services and supports for special education students enrolled in the behavioral supports program. This certificated position reports to the assistant director of Early Childhood and Elementary Special Education. The position resides at the ASD Education Center. The position receives retirement benefits through TRS (Teacher Retirement System) and the employee is represented by ACE (Anchorage Council of Education/American Federation of Teachers.) In accordance with the ASD/ACE bargaining contract this is a Range 11, 215 day position. The salary range, depending upon experience and education specific to this position, will be $70,014 - $85,103.

Job Requirements
The following is required:1.Possession of a bachelorís degree or above from a nationally accredited university in social work, elementary or secondary education, special education, school psychology, or a closely related field.
2.Possession of a valid Alaska Type A or Type C certificate.
3.Evidence of three years successful experience providing social services
4.Valid Alaska driverís license; able and willing to drive to home visits and to transport participants as needed.

The following are preferred:1.Possession of a masterís degree or higher in a related field.
2.Experience working with elementary age, inclusive of providing direct therapeutic and behavioral interventions, with students experiencing emotional and behavioral disabilities in an educational setting.
3.Experience working with and supporting families of students with mental health needs and community mental health agencies.
4.Understanding of recent trends in social services and educational best practices (i.e. behavioral health, common core, best practice in instruction, positive behavior supports)
5.Knowledge of services and supports mandated within the law for students with disabilities, and ASDís special education continuum of services.
6.Must be flexible in work schedule, based on participant and program needs to include frequent travel to schools and community locations.
7.Ability to work collaboratively with district-level and school level teams providing support and improvement for students with behavioral and mental health needs.
Essential Job Functions 1.Works collaboratively with all educational department personnel and community agencies to plan appropriate wraparound services and supports for special education students and their families enrolled in the school based behavioral supports program (SBBS).
2.Works collaboratively with district and school staff to develop and implement the supports associated with the school based behavior supports program (SBBS).
3.Plans, develops, and implements an appropriate intervention program for students with mental health needs, with an emphasis on integration with educational supports and services.
4.Uses the principles of a trauma sensitive systems of care or other professionally accepted principles of crisis management when providing services.
5.Participates with educational staff in the development of individual behavioral supports for students, which may include functional behavioral assessments, positive behavioral support plans, crisis plans, etc.
6.Acts as liaison for community agencies that have staff assigned to buildings to support students (i.e. Anchorage Community Mental Health, Southcentral, Denali Family Centers, Hope Community Resource, etc).
7.Develops and provides appropriate training and information on social emotional learning (SEL) for staff, families, and community members, as needed.
8.Maintains accurate and confidential records associated with case management (i.e. mental health assessments, home visits, data collection, state and federal requirements, etc).
9.Pursues continuous professional growth.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.
