The Job
The Opportunity Network (OppNet) is seeking a dynamic Chief of Staff to help the senior team maximize their leadership capacity and effectiveness in driving and managing strategic growth. We are looking for a high-performing individual passionate about OppNet’s mission and the students we serve and motivated by autonomous projects that require interdisciplinary thinking between communications, operations, leadership development, and external relations. The ideal candidate will possess senior-level competencies to build organizational systems that centralize and streamline projects among the C-Suite, program, and development teams, and an efficient support structure for the senior team. The Chief of Staff (COS) will assist the CEO, Chief Operating and Programs Officer (COPO), and Director of Development with institutional priorities, and operationalize plans aligned with these priorities. We are looking for a candidate who approaches each project with a cross-functional mindset, and can deftly manage myriad relationships inside and outside the organization.

Founded in 2003, The Opportunity Network seeks to level the playing field for students from underserved high schools by supporting them on the path to college and career opportunities. Our students thrive in college and careers as they master college and career competencies through OppNet’s Career Fluency® programming, including building networks, mobilizing social capital, increasing career awareness, excelling in internships, and making “best fit” college choices through intensive college counseling.

The Person
The ideal candidate will personally connect to the important work we do, and value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) across the organization. The candidate will demonstrate DE&I values by actively participating in all organizational-wide learning sessions and self-reflection as well as work with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting the organization’s DE&I goals. The successful candidate will display outstanding professionalism and discretion, organization and attention to detail, focus and flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple projects with varying priorities and timelines. The Chief of Staff will get exposure to the full array of functions in the organization and active opportunities to serve our students.

Strategic Communications
• Codify and streamline protocol and processes for communicating information to internal and external stakeholders
• Create action plan that aligns with communication strategies that enhance OppNet’s brand and CEO’s position as a thought leader through website redesign, social media, speaking engagements, and focused marketing
• Work with CEO’s Executive Assistant to develop a system to ensure and complete and consistent feedback loop between the Office of the CEO and all stakeholders
• Create and manage systems for internal communications to build and sustain staff culture, achieve organizational awareness or institutional priorities, and improve feedback mechanism for continuous improvement

Executive Initiatives
• Board of Directors Expansion and Engagement
o Serve as designated liaison in supporting the board, development team, and other staff-board relationship managers to enhance communication effectiveness and efficiency
o Develop plan to help CEO drive increased Board effectiveness with newly expanded Board
o Support the process for CEO to identify and attract new candidates to fill gaps in skillsets and expertise
o Under direction by the CEO, COPO, and Director of Development, create replicable structures and action plans for Board committees that align with emerging organizational priorities and initiatives
• Real Estate Analysis and Procurement
o Coordinate real estate research/analysis/procurement for OppNet’s next office under supervision of the COPO
o Gather information from staff on anticipated space requirements/functional needs aligned with growth plans
o Vet and secure a real estate partner to assess space needs mapped to growth, and conduct capital funds analysis
o Work with the CEO to assemble a Board committee to oversee the procurement and document institutional requirements and readiness for capital fundraising

Ongoing Organizational Analysis and Projects
• Stay connected to heartbeat of organization, providing on-the-ground insight into opportunities and issues that impact OppNet’s success
• Identify, develop, and monitor institutional priorities as they arise; advise CEO on interventions as necessary
• Help implement and review OppNet’s expansion plans to ensure progress is met and remains aligned with staff capacity and financial resources
• Design and implement highest quality professional development series for OppNet staff
• Build and systematically improve and update organizational dashboards for the CEO that includes seasonal/annual programmatic metrics, fundraising progress, Board expansion and engagement, and communications and visibility

Leadership of Special Projects
• Scope, plan, and execute multiple projects with tight timelines and minimal guidance
• Manage team members, and if necessary, oversee transfer of project to other stakeholders within organization
• Institutionalize best practices pertaining to knowledge management and knowledge transfer

Meeting Preparation/Facilitation
• Work closely with CEO’s Executive Assistant to remain apprised of/schedule upcoming commitments to optimally prepare and support the CEO
• Collaborate with Executive Assistant to prepare materials and background information necessary for meetings (CEO’s assistant will complete basic preparation)
• Attend meetings, capture notes and takeaways, and prepare follow-up correspondence and next steps for CEO

The successful candidate will possess the following assets and attributes:

• Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college/university, advanced degree preferred
• Minimum of eight years of transferable prior experience, including but not limited to strategic communications in the nonprofit or higher education sectors
• Commitment to The Opportunity Network’s mission and to social change work
• Demonstrated strong project management and organizational skills
• The ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment with various stakeholders
• Personal dedication to the quality of work produced and a high level of accountability
• Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills along with a high level of diplomacy, discretion, and problem solving ability
• Comfort in team-oriented environment based on open, transparent and continual communication, information sharing, and inclusive decision-making
• Maturity, professionalism, poise, and excellent judgment
• Experience distilling various perspectives and information down to concise key points
• Open to feedback and professional development
• 360-degree management skills, including high degree of emotional intelligence
• Capable of “managing up” to ensure effective communication and time/deadline management
• Proficiency in understanding data and using data to drive decision-making
• Personal commitment to continuous learning and improvement
• Strong sense of self-awareness
• Appreciation for and commitment to the importance of operationalizing equity and inclusion across OppNet
• Availability and willingness to work select weeknights and weekends with advanced notice
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
