The San Mateo County Transit District serves nearly 100,000 customers each weekday on its SamTrans buses, Redi-Wheels paratransit vehicles, Caltrain commuter rail cars and shuttles, as well as a robust capital program. The Transit District, which is in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The agency’s Operations Division is currently seeking a Part-Time Bus Operator to provide safe, courteous, and on-time public transportation on fixed-route and special services throughout San Mateo County.

In the position of Bus Operator, Part-Time, the incumbent will be responsible for safely transporting San Mateo County Transit District (District) passengers on assigned routes, making designated stops and professionally and effectively interacting with passengers and assisting them when necessary; providing customer service to District passengers in revenue service; safely operating transit buses in strict compliance with the District policies, and procedures and in accordance to all Federal and California transportation laws and regulations (including using proper defensive driving techniques); ensuring that proper fares are collected, stops are announced, and providing general information to the riding public; performing pre-trip inspection of each assigned vehicle before it goes into revenue service; performing post-trip inspection of each assigned vehicle after completion of revenue service and properly adjusting mirrors/head signs and operating computerized control panels, pushing buttons, door lever and other manual and foot controls on transit vehicles.

S/he will also be responsible for operating District radio communications system, assisting wheelchair patrons with boarding and seating; reading maps, frequency sheets, timetables, notices and other District materials, and completing reports on passenger counts, vehicular deficiencies, accidents, incidents, and service change requests and other reports and forms as required.

You should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Class ‘C’ California driver license with a good driving record at the time of application. Must be able to obtain and present a Class ‘B’ Commercial Driving Permit (with Passenger Transport Endorsement and Air Brakes) on the first day of training. Must have effective written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations. Must be reliable and dependable. Must be able to professionally and effectively interact with passengers, the public and fellow employees.
