Job Overview:

Directly reporting to the Director of Communications & Public Affairs, the Senior Manager, Community and Public Affairs will identify, support and further develop relationships amongst key stakeholders within the community, government and the industry. The Senior Manager would be responsible for maintaining a dialogue with those constituencies and identify issues that could affect how NYRA is perceived by those constituencies. From start to finish, they will develop, manage and execute plans for NYRA-sponsored events throughout the year, and represent NYRA at external events hosted by key stakeholders and constituencies.

The Senior Manager will be conversant in both English and Spanish, and will periodically function as a spokesperson for the organization with local, ethnic-themed and other relevant media channels. The Senior Manager may also be asked to occasionally assist in the development of talking points, communication plans, press releases, statements and other communication tactics as determined by the Director of Communications and Public Affairs.


Primary (85%)

The Senior Manager, Community Relations and Public Affairs will work directly with the Director, Communications and Public Affairs to develop, foster and grow relations with key stakeholders and constituencies by informing them of NYRA activities relevant to them, informing NYRA of concerns raised by local constituencies and coordinating NYRA's response.

Other primary responsibilities include the following:

• Developing, managing and executing NYRA-sponsored events during the Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga meets. This includes management of the Saratoga Race Course Community Booth, the Belmont 5k and Community Day during Belmont Stakes Week, Fabulous Fillies events at Belmont and Saratoga, as well as many others.
• Managing NYRA’s community relations committee and charitable platforms to support local, state, regional, national and industry-specific not-for-profit organizations. This includes managing all requests for funding, as well as the day-to-day management of the Community Relations budget.
• Working with all departments, including marketing, racing and horsemen’s relations department to build a community events calendar, and support numerous on-site activities including the growth of the community booth, facility tours by stakeholders and community groups, and winners circle presentations by stakeholders and community groups.
• Initiating and chairing monthly meetings of NYRA's community advisory board and quarterly meetings of community leaders. Serving as a liaison to horsemen's organizations on matters related to constituencies around racetracks.
• Developing relations with community organizations by attending meetings and networking with key individuals.

Secondary (15%)

• Raising NYRA's profile in local and ethnic media with the aim of increasing attention and interest to NYRA’s activities, events and initiatives, including NYRA’s charitable endeavors.
• Serving as an on-the-record spokesperson with local and ethnic media, as necessary


• A Bachelor's Degree in Public Affairs, Public Administration, Communications or a related subject area from an accredited college or university.
• Six to ten years progressively responsible, professional experience with a government entity, community-based or non-profit organization, the racing industry or within the private sector.
• Strong leadership qualities and demonstrated leadership experience as a project manager, as well as a supervisor of staff.
• Conversant and able to clearly and effectively communicate (orally and in written form) in both English and Spanish.
• Experience serving as a designated or occasional on-the-record spokesperson for an organization, entity or brand.
• Demonstrated program development and implementation skills.
• Ability to work effectively and independently with community leaders.
• Ability to represent the company effectively in a variety of settings and with diverse communities.
• Ability to work a racing schedule (Wednesday to Sunday) and work on site at all three of NYRA’s racetracks (Belmont Park, Saratoga and Aqueduct).
• Ability to operate on an on-call basis, as necessary.
• Ability to attend events, meetings and respond to inquiries outside normal business hours.
