Assistant Director for Career Development
Hart Career Center
Full-time, 10-months
The Hart Career Center, reporting to the division of Student Affairs, is the university’s centralized career planning and employment assistance service for students and graduates. The Assistant Director for Career Development provides oversight and leadership in the areas of career counseling, marketing, alumni development, student/staff and graduate student supervision and evaluation. Responsibilities include career counseling/coaching for students and alumni, campus outreach activities, career center programming promotion and strategy, resume and cover letter support, and coordination of the annual Career Immersion Excursion trip.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Career Counseling:
• Provide individual and group career counseling, coaching and advising to students and alumni by appointment and during assigned drop-in hours.
• Assist students with the internship/job search and graduate school selection/application process.
• Counsel students regarding the career development process, including administering and interpreting career assessment instruments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Focus II and other relevant assessments.
• Provide individual resume and cover letter review and assistance.
• Coach students to develop short- and long-term job seeking strategies/career plans.
Programming:
• Work extensively with IWU Alumni Relations and Advancement Officers to coordinate the annual Career Immersion Excursion (CIE) Trip.
• Chair the CIE planning committee and lead the committee through the process of identifying site locations, employer visits, transportation, accommodations, activities and itinerary of the trip.
• Present and promote the CIE experience to IWU Administration, prospective students and parents, alumni donors, and students through presentations and publication creation.
• Conduct campus outreach activities regarding career development.
• Design and present workshops and seminars related to the career development, graduate school preparation, and job search process.
• Collaborate with other University departments, academic and student affairs to provide services to students that fall under the umbrella of career services
• Identify student groups that under-utilize the University’s career services and create outreach opportunities targeting them.
Administration:
• Develop promotional materials and strategies for career center programming, events and services.
• Develop/maintain working knowledge of career-related resources including software and technologies (Handshake, C3M, LinkedIn).
• Keep current on industry and graduate school trends of interest to IWU students.
• Serve as liaison to other University departments as assigned and serve on external committees as needed.
• Supervise student staff and graduate students when applicable. Assist with student staff training/orientation.
Additional Knowledge/Qualifications: Master’s degree in Career Counseling, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, College Student Personnel or related field. One year required, two-three years preferred, of prior career services and/or counseling experience. Familiar with career assessments including the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory and knowledge of student development theory. Experience developing, conducting and analyzing outcome assessment surveys. Computer proficient with database management, spreadsheets, and automated recruitment software. Some evening and weekend work is required.
