VSC is a private non-profit agency providing comprehensive support services to crime victims and their significant others, prevention education/community awareness programs, and training to the professionals who work with the victims of these crimes.
VSC was organized in 1974 in response to the medical, legal and psychological needs of rape victims. A small group of women from across the county became concerned about the lack of a uniform response to victims of sexual assault. In 1985 a victim/witness program component was added, allowing us to provide the full range of services to all crime victims and meet a need that heretofore had not been met in Montgomery County. The victim/witness program tracks the progress of each case as it moves through the criminal justice system, provides personal accompaniment to each court proceeding from the time of arrest through the prosecution and sentencing, and up until the time the defendant is released on parole or probation. Advocates inform victims of their rights and provide assistance with crime victim compensation forms and victim impacts statements. Additionally, in-services are provided to police departments and hospitals. Weekly contact is maintained with district justices to assure that an advocate is present at preliminary hearings.
OUR MISSION: to provide advocacy and counseling for all who have been affected by sexual violence and other crimes against the person; and to promote sensitivity and awareness in the community through education.
